Valentine’s Day is the holiday about love, and if you are spending the day with your significant other, you want to make sure that your mouth is kissable and healthy all the time, not just on the holiday. Here are some tips about how to make sure that your mouth is healthy all year round.
Combat bad breath
Bad breath can be incredibly off-putting, and bacteria is often the culprit of bad breath. If you suffer from this, you want to make sure that you have an established dental hygiene routine that consists of brushing and flossing. If you are not able to brush your teeth after every meal, you may want to consider have sugarless gum handy or an antimicrobial mouthwash so you can rinse your mouth out after a meal. Both options will help your breath to stay fresh and get the saliva flowing in your mouth, especially after eating something that leaves behind a strong aftertaste.
Bacteria & cavities
Although not commonly known, cavities can be contagious. If you have bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities, it can be passed to another person if you are sharing kitchen utensils, sharing a cup or if you kiss. To make sure that you are not passing along bacteria, you want to make sure that you are brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day.
A whiter smile
A smile is often the first thing that someone notices about you and having a beautiful white smile can boost your confidence. There are many different options for whitening your teeth, from different kinds of toothpastes, over-the-counter options and in-office whitening treatments that your dentist can discuss with you. If your smile is not as bright as you would like, talk to your dentist about which option might be best for you.
Time for a new toothbrush?
Another way that you can ensure that your mouth is healthy is by making sure that only you are using your toothbrush and that you are changing your toothbrush out regularly. Although there are times that it might seem convenient to borrow someone else’s toothbrush, that means you are also putting all of their germs into your mouth. You can easily keep a travel-sized toothbrush in your purse or in your car for any instances that might arise where you need a toothbrush when you are out of the house. You also want to be sure to change your toothbrush out anytime that you are sick or anytime that you notice there is wear on the bristles of your toothbrush.
Smoking & dental health
Most people are aware of the numerous negative effects that smoking has on your health, but some people are not aware of the negative effects smoking also has on your dental health. In addition to being very bad for your lungs and body, smoking also stains your teeth and gives you bad breath. Tobacco users are put at a higher risk for developing gum disease, versus people who do not smoke. Tobacco users are also put at a higher risk for developing oral cancer.
Regular check-ups
The final way that you can ensure your mouth is healthy and ready for Valentine’s Day is by making sure that you keep up with your regular dental visits. Most dental issues, if caught early, can be managed and treated. If you are experiencing any type of dental issue, contact your dentist today.
